  I’ve come into possession of a, I think, SIII trans. I’m trying to figure out, without opening it up, if it’s a syncro or non-syncro trans. Are there any external details which will indicate which it is?

  Do you have the shifter attached? If you do, the synchro transmissions have reverse all the way to the right and down. Non-synchro has reverse on the left side.

  You should also find a date code on the side of the gearbox. The date can help identify which series the gearbox was for.

  Cool, thanks Mike. Yes, a shifter is still attached, that helps. I appreciate the reply.
