United 40 logo

Mark your calendars and start making your plans to attend United 40.

Bowling Green is our destination, and it is conveniently located near the intersection of highways I-65 and I-165, about an hour south of Lexington, KY, and an hour north of Nashville, TN.

Bowling Green is the home to the National Corvette Museum (NCM) and Motorsports Park, and as such, it offers much for the automotive enthusiast. Many other interesting attractions are located here.

If that were not enough, the proximity to Kentucky horse and bourbon country might tempt some to wander out on their own, especially if you plan for extra days before or after the event. Speaking of extra days before the event, Joe Parlanti is working on some drives and visits to other Kentucky attractions before the event. For more information, contact Joe at (240) 632-0649 or email Ch********@te**.org

Holiday Inn Bowling Green KY
Holiday Inn University Plaza, Bowling Green, KY

The Holiday Inn University Plaza will be our host hotel and will offer a room rate of $130.00 per night (plus tax), which includes a buffet breakfast. Attendees can get this special rate three days before or after our blocked time (Sep 14-17, 2023.)

We have fifty rooms blocked off, so make your reservations NOW. You can book online or by phone. Regardless of how you book, use the this link for booking instructions.

The image at left shows an aerial view of the hotel grounds. Adequate parking for Rootes cars (red oval) and trailers (blue oval) is available. The concours will be held in a fenced-in paddock adjacent to the hotel (yellow oval.)

I know the combined Parts Room and Hospitality Suite was a big hit at this year’s United, but due to hotel regulations and local alcohol beverage laws, it was not possible to arrange that. So, our hospitality suite will be a private suite on one of the guest room floors. This will allow us to bring in our own beverages and snacks. The hotel will remove the beds and add in tables and chairs for our convenience.

We have planned a weekend full of activities that include our usual events and some interesting tours. Here is a breakdown of what we have planned by day.

For most, Thursday is arrival day. Registration will open at 12 noon. Check-in and get your ID and goodie bag. For those who arrive early we have arranged for some track time starting at 12 noon Thursday at the 3.2 mile road course at NCM Motorsports Park racetrack.

“Touring laps” are taken two cars at a time behind the pace car. Although a pace car is present, the NCM people assure me you will get the “track experience.” Track officials try to group participants based upon how hard they want to push their cars. Although we will visit as a group, to participate you will need to register separately with the NCM. Cost is $100 for four laps. Look for instructions on how to register in the coming months.

Nothing is planned right now for Thursday evening, but we will be looking at possible presentations as we get closer.

On Friday morning we will set out on a scenic drive generally following the Duncan Hines Scenic Byway, with some modifications for length and time. This route will take us in and around Mammoth Cave National Park.

Our drive will end at the NCM where we will enjoy a lunch of sandwich wraps and then tour the Corvette Museum. The cost for lunch and the museum tour are included in your registration fee.

Late Friday afternoon we will squeeze in a quick meeting for those judging at the concours. On Friday evening, we will have a welcome reception with cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres. A General Membership meeting will follow immediately in the same room. After the membership meeting, we are planning to show a movie or documentary about motor racing or similar subject.

Our concours will be conveniently located in a fenced-in, grassy paddock adjacent to the hotel (yellow oval at left). This year we will take a break from the judging at noon to enjoy box lunches. We’ll finish judging the cars after lunch.

Saturday evening is open right now, but we are working on arranging for tech sessions or a presentation by a guest speaker.

Much is planned for Sunday, although because of the geographic separation and the times, you will only be able to choose one. Admission to all Sunday activities (except the autocross) are included in your registration fee.

The Autocross event is becoming more and more of a challenge, both physically and financially. Nevertheless, this year we will participate in the event held by the Kentucky Region of the Sports Car Club of America (KYSCCA) at the NCM Motorsports Park. This association will require each participant to register and pay for the autocross directly with the KYSCCA ($50 for non-SCCA members) Look for additional instructions soon.

I am sure many will want to go on the tour of the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN. This tour will require a one-way drive of approximately one hour, fifteen minutes. The Lane Museum is one of the premier auto museums in the country. More information about the Lane Motor Museum can be found here.

One of the highlights of the Bowling Green area is Mammoth Cave. We will make arrangements for a tour of this natural wonder. Please be aware that the tour involves a considerable amount of walking, although the two-hour “Accessible Tour” that we have chosen has no stairs.

Our last activity for Sunday is kart racing at the NCM Motorsports Park. Commencing at noon, each participant will get an eight-minute session. The first session is covered as part of your registration fee. You can purchase additional sessions that day.

For the Grand Finale, our Annual Awards Banquet will be held in Ballroom A of the Holiday Inn. We will have a cash bar opening one hour before dinner. Entrees will be a choice of beef or Salmon. As always, special meals for those with dietary restrictions will be available. We will give away some nice door prizes and see which members and cars are recognized.

So that’s the plan.

Look for registration to open on or about April 1, 2023.
